workshop seven
Leatherbound journals (Cross-structure binding)
Sunday 27 November 2016 @ 1-5pm
This workshop teaches the style of Cross-structure binding to make a notebook with soft leather covers and filled with an assortment of different papers (recycled, writing, sketch or watercolour paper, coloured, translucent, or even found papers). The eco-friendly upcycled leathers provided in class come in a wide choice of colours and textures. And you are welcome to bring in your own papers for binding into the book if you wish.
The 'Cross-structure' binding technique has been around since medieval times. The sections of pages are handsewn onto the leather 'fingers' of the covers, either leaving the stitching exposed or concealing it behind a panel of leather (both styles are taught in this class - your choice of which you'd prefer to make).
Cross-structure binding enables the book to open completely flat, making it perfect for travel journals, diaries, notepads and sketchbooks.
All bookbinding materials and tools are provided as part of the workshop. And all templates and instructions are also included so you will be able to make more books at home.
