I agree that handcrafts have and will always be there, and the internet has played a huge factor in bringing craft to the attention of the mainstream, but I also think that the explosion in popularity of handcrafted items is a reaction to mass production. There is something boring and empty in an item that is only limited in number by how many the manufacturer can sell. It has no humanity. While a handcrafted item has been made by a real person, using skill and attention to detail, and will be as individual as the person who made it, and I think more and more people are seeing the value in these items over a similar item that has been cheaply mass produced.

Firstly, congrats on the SMH mention. I'm new to the crafty thing. Making things that is. Things other than stories. But I've always preferred buying handmade over commercial. It's always unique, tangible and tactile.

I think that technology has played a part in the conversation and distribution of crafty stuff, bringing it into the spotlight. I also believe that we live in such a fast-paced world that making things is a way of slowing down and tuning out from the busyness of every day life.

Maybe excess choice has made us fussy too...and provided a receptive audience for crafty things.

P.S. I'm pleased to say my tie-dying days of the 90's are over! (I think?)
