It's the final week of the Undiscovered Press exhibition, so if you're in Melbourne between now and Friday the 26th February, make sure you venture down into the Degraves Subway (at the end of Degraves Lane, under Flinders Street) to check out Platform Gallery's cabinets full of zine awesomeness.
You'll see work from the likes of talented zinesters such as Mary-Helen Daly (aka Fetus, aka Tiny Paper Hearts), Pat Grant, On Wednesday, Androniki Douramakos, Cameron Baker, Sarah Foster, Brendan Halyday, Marc Martin, Arlene TextaQueen, and Fergus - an eclectic mix to be sure.
^ Mary-Helen Daly's colourful cabinet, pre-pimping. See here for actual finished result.
^ Pat Grant's amazing assortment of art + zines. Whoa, incredible!
^ The remarkably impressive and detailed work of On Wednesday.
^ A cosy corner of cute Fergus zines.
And as mentioned in Shelbyville's previous post, this exhibition also represents the unveiling and first public showing of Issue #1 of the new little zine Urban Quirky: Red Doors & Robots. Hoorah!
^ Cardboard backdrop, bitumen texture base, the 12 page panels, and an assortment of bits showing the development process of making the RD&R zine.

Opening Night: Friday 12th February
Good times and plenty of red wine (and free promotional Red Bulls) were had at the exhibition's opening night, with a little extra excitement provided by two unexpected events: 1) an impromptu subway skateboarding session following on from an appearance/signing by RZA at Wax Museum Records; and 2) animated discussion about the dramatic (but luckily not zine-destroying) flash flood from the previous afternoon's thunderstorms:
^ A new, but thankfully temporary, water feature in Degraves Subway.
So now after all the excitement, I'm back home in Sydney again - the suitcase unpacked, the post-travel laundry all done, the photos downloaded from the cameras, and now I'm just slowly returning back to the creative routine of the studio. Had hoped to do some mobile blogging from the iPhone, but alas, was just too preoccupied with Melbourne adventures at the time...! But more about these Melb adventures (and new finds!) in a post coming soon...

Just wondering .... was that colourful work of Mary-Helen taken pre-pimping or pre-PRIMPING?

Hi Michelle, lucky you posted your pictures because when I went to the exhibit on the Friday 26th they had all been taken down.

Alisa: well spotted! They are indeed the Gocco-printed robot buttons.
Jude: yep, pre-pimping, like in that TV show 'Pimp my Ride'... ;)
Vetti: So glad you liked my new zines! I'll have to send you the next couple of Little Grimys that I'm just finishing off.
Karen: D'oh, I knew they were finishing on Friday, but not so early! I heard they had to have the cabinets repainted that evening, in time for the next exhibition being installed on the weekend. Shame.
