If you're in Melbourne and looking for something to pique your creative interests over the next 7 days, it just so happens to be the final week of the month-long Festival of the Photocopier, hosted by the fabulous folk of Sticky (zine store in Degraves Subway) and full of zine-related goodness.
This final week of Festival of the Photocopier (finishes on Sunday the 28th Feb) features the launch of a zine dedicated to the correct pronunciation of Macarons; copyright issues with zinester Luke You and comic artist Alex Pavlotski as they discuss their experiences on both sides of the law; a history lesson with 90s zinester Iain McIntyre of legendary Woozy fame; and a special public viewing of the Spacekids zine collection at the State Library of Victoria spanning the 90s and beyond. The Facebook event + details about Week 4 can be found by clicking here.

Festival of the Photocopier Zine Fair - 13th February 2010
^ Susy Pow, the powerhouse behind the Bird in the Hand distro and Newcastle zine shop, and fellow explorer of interstate cities...
^ Chatting with the wonderful Yvette, authoress of the cool blog Vetti: Live in Northcote.
^ Zinester extraordinaires Meggs and Amanda of Tiny Paper Hearts and their spookily accurate felt-constructed likenesses.
^ Busy, busy in the Degraves Subway zine fair
I'm backtracking a little here, but Week 2 of the Festival of the Photocopier also happened to feature the very excellent Zine Fair event. Unfortunately as a result of Melbourne's legendarily unpredictable weather, the zine fair was forced back underground into the sheltered warmth of Degraves Subway instead of its previous plan of being located in the more visible and populated surrounds of City Square on Swanson St. But regardless, it was a busy and fun afternoon behind the zine stall table, and my two new zines, Red Doors & Robots and Little Grimy were both well-received and found happy homes :)
^ New zines (Red Doors & Robots and Little Grimy) add some colour to the table.
It was a stroke of genius on Sticky's part to hire the Melbourne Tramways Band to play their upbeat (but not overly noisy) jazz tunes throughout the afternoon. Music at a zine fair can often be hit-and-miss (too loud, too experimental, too annoying), but these guys suited the atmosphere perfectly, lending just the right amount of quirk and perk, I thought.
^ The Melbourne Tramways Band get their groove on
Having DD down in Melbourne with me for the weekend (and therefore someone to help man the table) meant I had opportunity to wander and peruse the zine fair. Between me and DD, we brought home a couple of new zine finds + swaps. Favourites included:
- Audrey & Audrey by Ayano Takeuchi
- Ladybeard by (zine queen) Maddy Phelan
- Lumpen #6 and #7 by (artist extraordinaire) Pat Grant
- Holiday Tear Memorial by Emma Markala
- Susy's Family by Susy Pow
- Spoonful by Anthea Krook
^ A nice mix of new zine delights. Audrey & Audrey even comes resplendent with gold-foil stamping on both its front and back covers (I hear the author's day job is in a printery... sweet!).
And being Valentines Day eve and all, I treated DD to a hand-typed 'valentine' personally compiled on the fly and expertly tapped out by Sticky Institute's secretary of love (and his trusty assistant). With eloquent and evokative phrases such as "I like your clicky box that does the flashy flash and takes them photo things... in fact if you clicky click my box, I may just flash you", I think he captured my heartfelt intentions rather nicely. And a special thank you to Elle who promptly provided "thruster feelings" as a synonym for "passions", when the Secretary felt he'd overused the passion word too much already. Hmmm.
^ Tapping out a sweet valentine on the typewriter of lurrrrve.

Anyway, must scoot for now.
With happiness and lots of zine-yness,
Michelle
