Junior's just arrived! A new little brother to my zine/artist-book Majellen!
I spent most of this month creating Mini Majellen, to have it ready in time for a zine fair recently held as part of the Poetry After Dark event at The Zoo nightclub. They were a popular little seller on the night, and I sold all the copies of MM I'd brought with me to the fair, and a few mail orders as well! Their tiny little size (approx 10cm square) makes them easy to post, so if you'd like a copy, send me an email at michelleav@hotmail.com and we'll arrange it. At $2, they're a bargain!
For a little background, MM was created within a few creative boundaries:
1. could only be printed in black, and photocopiable.
2. had to be designed to fit on an A3 sheet which was then cut and concertina-folded into a small 12-page book.
3. could only use 'found things' for content, production and binding.
So I trawled through my collection of bits and pieces found on city streets (does anyone else have one of these collections?) and also through my large assortment of charity-store books and arty ephemera, and spent hours and hours on my computer's scanner, scanning in old tickets and random junky items and pictures from very very old non-fiction books, magazines and storybooks, trying to link my real-life 'found things' with imagery found in these books, and using the mix of visuals to tell a story of things to 'find' and do in the city.
The result was MM, a small but evokative little zine that featured a different 'found thing' glued to each cover, making each one unique and individual. This no doubt had some bearing on their sale at the zine fair, with everyone happy to choose the MM with the 'found thing' on the cover they most related to. It was quite an intrigueing design/merchandising experience!
Other zines featured at the fair include GL's 'Looking Up' and 'Bower Rainbow' and JC's 'Little'. and a few other cool zines that'll I'll post when I get home tonight...
And I guess now that MM has arrived, it's time to divert attention back to Majellen issue no.2, Laundromatic. To be continued...
